The Board of Directors and Staff are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Christopher S. Bowman to the Medical Staff of Sweetwater Hospital. Dr. Bowman specializes in Orthopedic Surgery. He is fellowship-trained in Sports Medicine and has extensive experience in the field of arthroscopic and minimally invasive surgery to treat injuries of the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, and ankle. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons.
Prior to his relocation to Sweetwater, he was an attending surgeon at The Hughston Clinic in Columbus, Georgia, where he was active in patient care and the training of orthopedic surgeons from around the world in advanced arthroscopic surgical techniques. His areas of clinical research included obesity and hypertension in adolescent athletes, posterolateral knee injuries, and revision anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery.
Dr. Bowman graduated from Sweetwater High School in 1990. He received the Whittle Scholarship to attend the University of Tennessee. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and graduated Summa Cum Laude. The Whittle Scholarship included a fifth year to study overseas, and he spent that year in France before going on to medical school at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis. At UT Memphis, Dr. Bowman was selected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, which recognizes the top students in the medical school class.
After graduating from medical school, Dr. Bowman was accepted into the highly regarded Greenville Orthopedic Surgery residency program in Greenville, South Carolina. During the five year orthopedic surgery residency, Dr. Bowman underwent training in orthopedic fracture care as well as general orthopedic surgery. His clinical research included a study on a new treatment for high-energy tibia fractures.
Following residency, Dr. Bowman spent a year at the Hughston Clinic in Columbus, Georgia, for a subspecialty fellowship in Sports Medicine and arthroscopic surgery. The Hughston Clinic is known throughout the world as the birthplace of Orthopedic Sports Medicine. After his fellowship, he accepted an invitation to stay at the Hughston Clinic as an attending surgeon. He served on the Hughston Sports Medicine Foundation Board of Directors, the Hughston Sports Medicine Fellowship Committee, and the Hughston Orthopedic Hospital Institutional Review Board for clinical research.
Dr. Bowman is the son of Sweetwater Hospital Administrator Scott Bowman and Mrs. Sherry Corn Bowman, formerly a teacher with the McMinn County School System. Dr. Bowman and his wife, Aliceson, reside in Sweetwater.
Dr. Bowman occupies an office in the Sweetwater Hospital Professional Building. Office hours – Monday 8:00 am – 11:00 am, Tuesday 8:00 am – 4:30pm, Wednesday 1:30 pm – 4:00 pm and Thursday 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.
